The UGC-Academic Staff College Kumaun University, Nainital was sanctioned by the UGC, New Delhi in October 2006 and started functioning with immediate effect. In addition to conducting orientation programmes and refresher courses the ASC also undertakes a number of extension activities.

About Us
The UGC ASC Nainital is the first Academic Staff College in the Uttarakhand region and is to play a leading role in the pursuit of excellence in higher education in the region. It is envisaged that the College will engage not only in its primary task of training of teachers in higher education, but will also undertake varied extension activities in the academic arena. Its vision includes:

Aiding the capacity building and overall personality development of the teachers. Arranging lectures on varied subjects such as stress management, time management, communication skills, inter-personal relationships, first aid training, etc.

Ensuring that all programmes focus on new concepts and emerging trends in the area of research and academics.

Compiling supplementary reading material for the participants of the various training courses, and module building on communication skills, pedagogy, etc.

Creating awareness and stimulating interest about relevant regional issues like biodiversity conservation and disaster management in the region through lectures and mock exercises.

Building a rich library to make the ASC a hub of academic activities.

Conducting short term courses and programmes for non-teaching staff and administrative staff of the University. The overall vision is to make the ASC a centre for academic activity which will also aid the development of this Himalayan region.

In addition to conducting the regular Orientation and Refresher Courses the ASC has undertaken a number of extension activities.

Publication of an annual interdisciplinary journal QUEST, the first issue of which has been published in summer 2007. It is hoped this journal will provide an open forum for publication of quality research work, and also for interaction among academicians and interlink ages among various disciplines. Floating a Think Tank Ideas, which is envisaged as a center for policy research, advice and counseling. Ideas will also undertake exercises to aid policy implementation.

Module formulation, compilation and publication of supplementary study material to aid the trainees. Short term training exercises in disaster management, medical first aid, communication skills, and stress management.

How to Reach:
Nainital is well-connected by rail-cum-road from all the major towns of the country. It is located at the distance of about 325 kms. from Delhi and about 380 kms. from Lucknow. The twin township of Kathgodam-Hadlwani is the last rail-head en route to Naintial. The distance between Haldwani-Kathgodam and Nainital is 40-36 kms.

You should bring adequate clothing suitable for Nainital (Kumaun), which has cold winters and moderate summers. Climate during the winters is very cold. Woolens are a must.
